New York City - Twelve outstanding pieces of art have been selected as the winners of HIAS’ 11th Annual Poster Contest for Immigrant Youth. HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the nation’s oldest resettlement agency, designed the contest to let first and second generation immigrant children express their thoughts in art about their adopted country. The theme of this years contest was “America’s Place in the World.”

The grand prize went to Annabelle Bluvshteyn, a 9 year-old resident of Fishers, Indiana. Her painting, done in watercolors and crayon, depicts a marathon race in which America is leading the world to peace. “She leads everybody to peace and happiness,” she explains. “All of the people are dressed in their countries flags and follow the torchbearer, just like the countries follow America to peace.”

The young contest winners, whose families recently came to the States from countries including Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Belarus and Azerbaijan, will have their artwork featured in HIAS’ 2006 online calendar. A grand prize of a $1,000 U.S. savings bond was awarded to Annabelle Bluvshteyn. A runner-up receiving a special cash prize was selected in each age category (children are judged within groups of 4-7, 8-11 and 12-15). All participants received certificates of achievement.
