Scholarships
In 1974, Edwin and Claire Shapiro approached HIAS to establish the Richard Alan Shapiro Scholarship Fund in memory of their son, whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident. Soon after, Norbert Schimmel created a major scholarship fund to honor his son. What these three generous people started has grown into a flourishing program of hundreds of scholarships awarded each year in the U.S. and Israel, provided by people who want to ensure that HIAS-assisted refugees will have a chance to contribute to their adoptive country through the opportunities afforded only by advanced education. |
