| How to Apply for Naturalizatio
How does one apply for naturalization? An application for naturalization includes:
A fully completed and signed form N-400, Naturalization Application;
A filing fee of $260, plus an additional fingerprint fee of $50 if the applicant is not yet 75 years old. It is acceptable to submit a single check or money order for $310, payable to “BCIS”;
Two identical color photos with a white background and a ¾ profile view of the right side of the face. The right ear should be visible;
A copy of one’s green card (both sides) or other evidence of Lawful Permanent Resident status;
Clear copies of all required supporting documentation. These are listed and described in A Guide to Naturalization. The six pages of useful instructions that accompany Form N-400 are actually incomplete without the Guide. BCIS recommends that applicants first read the Guide, which is available on the BCIS website in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese, and Vietnamese. To view or download a copy, click here. Or one may order a copy from the BCIS National Forms Center at 1-800-870-3676.

Where does one mail an N-400 naturalization application? An N-400 must be mailed to the BCIS service center that has jurisdiction over an applicant’s State of residence. Do not mail it to a local office of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. There are four large service centers: the BCIS Vermont Service Center in St. Albans, Vermont; the BCIS Nebraska Service Center in Lincoln, Nebraska; the BCIS Texas Service Center in Mesquite, Texas; and the BCIS California Service Center in Laguna Niguel, California.
